Winning Entry
Housing the Next 10 Million Competition
Project: California’s Central Valley is projected to grow by
10 million people in the next 40 years. This projected growth puts the
region’s agricultural economy and the character at risk. This
proposal demonstrates how growth can be accommodated in a manner
that enhances the character of the existing community, provides compact
growth patterns that protect the valuable agricultural land and recommends
pedestrian-oriented neighborhoods as the framework for growth.
Program: Our
proposal used Modesto as a case study for growth. The proposal
included the following:
- A set of principles that could be used by any community to help direct their vision
- Analysis of Modesto’s growth patterns
- A comprehensive city plan in coordination with small adjoining towns
- Street Design Standards
- Application of the neighborhood structure on a 800-acre greenfield site
- Building-type based regulating system
