Richmond Residential Design Guidelines
Richmond, California
Project: Establishing design standards for renovations and additions to Richmond’s existing Heritage Homes.
The Design Guidelines introduce massing types and architectural styles for appropriately scaled additions and renovations. The massing type section explains appropriate location and scale for small, medium and large additions to existing homes. The architectural styles section highlights characteristics of four of the distinct architectural styles found within Richmond: Richmond Spanish Revival, Richmond Bungalow, Richmond Tudor and the Richmond Minimal Traditional.
The format is graphic-based to provide easy use and interpretation by property owners, builders, architects, and planning staff. In an effort to be aware of the environmental impact of distributing paper documents, the Design Guidelines have been made available on the City of Richmond’s web site. In addition, the document is broken down into sections so only applicable sections are handed out to interested parties by the planning staff. The format allows for the document to grow as more massing types and architectural styles are needed.
