Santa Fe Courtyard Housing GreenWORKS Design Competition - Overall Winner
Santa Fe, NM

The GreenWORKS Design Competition was sponsored by the City of Santa Fe, Enterprise Community Partners and Green Communities to provide a model green, affordable infill project within the Westside Guadalupe Historic District, solicit designs that would meet Santa Fe’s new green building code, and conform to historic design standards. The winning entry had to design housing on the determined quarter-acre lot, which had to include at least two affordably-priced homes.

Our Courtyard housing design on the quarter-acre lot, reinforces a sense of community by providing a network of four courtyards engaged by six units. Within the main courtyard, a community building provides a space for informal gatherings, shared dinners, and a place to celebrate special events. The design approach brought sustainable methods to the planning of the site, the layout of the units, and the selection of finishes, materials and systems. The integration of high-quality affordable housing further enhances both the community and the sustainable approach to making this a model project for Santa Fe’s new green building code.

To call the Opticos plan green is something of an understatement. Green features include: passive solar heating and cooling; maximization of cross ventilation through site orientation and shallow building depths; use of local materials and construction techniques including recycled and reclaimed materials; solar panels, greenliving roofs that provide passive cooling, increased insulation and the cultivation of native plants that encourage renewal of locally scarce bird species; low/no voc finishes, drought tolerant indigenous landscaping; an edible organic community garden and roof runoff rainwater collection for use in irrigation.
