Opticos Wins GreenWORKS Design Competition
On January 23, 2009, Opticos was declared Overall Winner of the GreenWORKS Design Competition. The objective for the competition was to challenge designers to incorporate sustainable design and affordably-priced housing into a site plan for a multi-unit, residential housing compound in downtown Santa Fe.

Our Courtyard housing design on the quarter-acre lot, reinforces a sense of community by providing a network of four courtyards engaged by six units.
“This courtyard housing design is green, affordable, and rooted in the history and culture of Santa Fe, and its shows that affordability and good design can go hand in hand."
- Daniel Parolek
Within the main courtyard, a community building provides a space for informal gatherings, shared dinners, and a place to celebrate special events. The design approach brought sustainable methods to the planning of the site, the layout of the units, and the selection of finishes, materials and systems. The integration of high-quality affordable housing further enhances both the community and the sustainable approach to making this a model project for Santa Fe’s new green building code.

Form-Based Codes Book

Reviews of Form-Based Codes
Form-Based Codes voted Top 10 Books for 2009 by Planetizen
"Measured and thoughtful, Form-Based Codes is an intelligent how-to. Like a good textbook, the thoughts build one upon the other until you can see the clarity and wisdom of shedding your city’s zoning and moving to an enlightened future based on form rather than use. Pictures and charts are plentiful, and case studies build the impression that form-based codes aren’t some wacky new theory, but the continuing expression of solid principles of urban design." Journal of the American Planning Association by Rick Cole
“The impressive Form-Based Codes volume spans the genres; it is a guide for planners, urban designers, developers, and elected officials on how to actually implement the most significant planning reform of this generation.” Winter 2009, Vol. 75, No. 1
